ส่วนเนื้อเรื่องภาค Modern Warfare 2 นั้นก็แทบจะเริ่มเรื่องต่อจากภาคที่แล้วเลยครับ (จากภาค Call of Duty: Modern Warfare) ซึ่งเหตุการณ์ภาคนี้เกิดขึ้น 5 ปีหลังจากภาคที่แล้ว โดยมีตัวละครเอกภาคก่อนอย่าง Soap MacTavish กับ Captain John Price ก็ยังกลับมาในภาคนี้อีกด้วย ซึ่งเหตุการ์ณภาคนี้ก็เกี่ยวกับผู้ก่อการร้ายจากรัสเ ซียที่มีนามว่า Vladimir Makarov ที่ก่อเหตุวุ่นวายมากหมายทั่วทวีปยุโรป โดยภาคนี้นั้นเราจะได้เล่นเป็นพลทหารหลายต่อหลายคนใน หน่วยต่อต้านผู้ก่อการร้าย Task Force 141 ที่มีผู้นำกลุ่มที่มีชื่อว่า General Shepherd
