Game of Thrones สร้างมาจากหนังซีรีส์ชื่อดัง (ก็ใช้ชื่อเดียวกันนั่นแหละ) ที่ฉายทางช่อง HBO ซึ่งดัดแปลงมาจากซีรีส์หนังสือนวนิยายขายดีอย่าง A Song of Ice and Fire ที่แต่งโดย George R. R. Martin โดยก่อนหน้านี้ค่าย BioWare เจ้าพ่อเกม RPG ชื่อดังก็เกือบจะจับซีรีส์นี้ไปทำเกมอยู่แล้ว (ก่อนจะตัดสินใจว่าไม่เอา แล้วหันไปทำ Star Wars : The Old Republic แทน) ระบบหลักๆ ในเกมก็เหมือนเกม MMORPG ทั่วๆ ไป แต่ที่เป็นจุดเด่นคือเนื้อเรื่องและเควสท์ที่จะเข้มข้นไม่แพ้ในหนังหรือหนังสือเลยทีเดียว
