Space Engineers เป็นเกมตระกูล SANDBOX (มีแมปให้ มีอุปกรณ์ให้ คนเล่นอยากจะทำอะไรก็ทำ) โดยเกมจะเน้นไปที่สร้างสิ่งของในอวกาศ (สิ่งปลูกสร้าง/ยานอวกาศ/ฯลฯ)สิ่งที่ทำให้แตกต่างไปคือระบบฟิสิกส์ของเกม มีทั้งแรงโน้มถ่วง มวล ความเร็ว บลาๆ เป็นปัจจัยในการเล่น ปัจจุบันมีโหมดให้เล่นอยู่สองโหมดด้วยกันคือ โหมดสร้างกับโหมดเอาตัวรอด
