Samurai Shodown หรือ Samurai Spirits ในญี่ปุ่น เป็นซีรี่ย์เกม Fighting จาก SNK (ผู้สร้าง The King of Fighters) และนี่คือภาค Reboot ที่ห่างหายไปนานถึง 11 ปี นับจากภาคล่าสุด Samurai Shodown Sen ที่เปิดตัวในปี 2008 และเกมนี้ยังเป็นเกมแรกจาก SNK ที่ตัดสินใจใช้ Unreal Engine ในการพัฒนา (Unreal Engine 4)
เนื้อเรื่องของ Samurai Shodown ในภาคนี้เริ่มขึ้นก่อนที่ตัวเกมภาคแรกสุดประมาณ 7 ปี ซึ่งก็คือปี 1787 ในยุคสมัยเทนเมย์ที่บ้านเมืองยังคงวุ่นวายไม่ต่างจากเดิม แต่ก็ได้มีการเลือกตัว Matsudaira Sadanobu ขึ้นมาเป็นโชกุนเพื่อนำพาญี่ปุ่นไปสู่ยุคใหม่ ซึ่งก็เป็นเรื่องราวที่ตั้งเอาไว้อย่างหลวม ๆ เพื่อให้เหล่าตัวละครทั้งหน้าใหม่หน้าเก่ามาปะทะกันในเกมเช่นเดิม
ซึ่งก็เป็นสไตล์ของเกมต่อสู้จากฝั่งญี่ปุ่นที่จะไม่เน้นที่เนื้อเรื่องแบบลงลึกมากนัก โดยจะแยกจากกันเป็นตัวละครไปเหมือนในเกมสมัยเก่า ว่าใครไปเจอกับใคร และจบที่ต้องพบกับอะไร ซึ่งถ้าหากอยากรู้เรื่องราวว่าจบลงจริง ๆ แบบไหนก็ต้องรอเนื้อเรื่องจากทางผู้พัฒนาเผยออกมาเองว่าจะใช้เส้นเรื่องของใคร ถือเป็นเรื่องปกติของเกมต่อสู้ในสมัยก่อน
