The Long Dark เป็นเกมแนว Survival sandbox ในรูปแบบมุมมองบุคคลที่ 1 ที่ผู้เล่นจะต้องประทังชีวิตตัวเองให้รอดจากสภาพบรรยากาศโหดร้ายในป่าทึบแดนเหนือที่ปกคลุมด้วยหิมะ และตามสูตรสำเร็จเกมเอาชีวิตรอดทั่วไปเลยก็คือระบบการหาทรัพยากร การสร้างของ และการเอาชีวิตรอดจากผู้อื่นที่ตกอยู่ในสถานการณ์แย่ไม่แพ้เรา ซึ่งเกมจะนำเสนอเรื่องของจริยธรรมและคุณธรรมวัดกันเลยว่าคุณจะยอมเห็นใจเพื่อนมนุษย์ด้วยการช่วยเหลือหรือทางตรงกันข้ามทำทุกอย่างให้ตัวเรารอด ทั้งนี้ทางทีมพัฒนาได้บอกว่าความเป็นแอ็คชั่นจะหาได้ในเกมนี้ค่อนข้างยากหน่อยแต่จะเน้นไปที่การเอาตัวรอดล้วนๆมากกว่า ซึ่งเกมนั้นจะปล่อยออกมาในรูปแบบ Episode พร้อมทั้งเนื้อเรื่องให้เราได้ติดตามกัน
