Description:
Quickly check any high-capacity USB drive for intentionally lost space.
ValiDrive performs a quick random scan of all declared disk space in random order. At each location, it verifies that random (non-forgeable) test data is successfully stored and retrieved.
Additional Information:
At first glance, this may seem like a minor annoyance: you buy a 1 or 2 terabyte drive at a bargain price, but instead get a 64 GB drive. But that is NOT happening here!
It looks like this is the 1 or 2 terabyte drive you purchased. You connect it to your computer and everything is fine. You can even copy files to disk; as much as you want. And when you look at the contents of the disk, the files are there. But the insidious thing is that the contents of the files may never have been saved.
These rogue drives contain enough space (usually 64 GB) to convincingly store a list of file system directories. But once the first 64 GB of storage space is full, the contents of any additional files will not actually be saved. Their names, dates and sizes will be stored in a directory at the front of the drive. It will seem like everything is fine. But the contents of the files will be empty because they were "stored" where there is no storage.
Operating systems do not check whether the data they write was actually written. They rely on the honesty of storage devices to report errors. If a write error occurs, the operating system will overwrite the data to another location. But these deliberately rogue drives never report any problems - they simply silently delete any data written where there is no storage space.
The first signs of a problem occur when
trying to read a saved file. It seems that even this
will work... but the file itself will be empty!
