Crusader Kings เป็นตระกูลเกมแนววางแผนบริหารอาณาจักร แต่โฟกัสจะอยู่ที่ระบบเจ้าขุนมูลนายในยุคกลาง และจุดเด่นไม่ได้อยู่ที่การขยายถิ่นฐาน แต่อยู่ที่เนื้อเรื่องของตัวละครและการบริหารอำนาจของอาณาจักรในยุคกลาง โดยตัวละครแต่ละตัวจะมีความสามารถและลักษณะจำเพาะ รวมถึงสามารถ เกิด แก่ เจ็บ ตาย แต่งาน พร้อมได้ค่าสถานะจากเหตุการณ์ต่างๆ ตลอดชีวิต เช่น ถ้าตัวละครกษัตริย์รบแพ้ อาจติดสถานะ กลัวสงคราม หรือ บาดเจ็บ อย่างถาวร
นอกจากนี้ตัวละครยังสามารถแต่งงาน มีลูกได้ (ถ้าในครอบครัวมีลูกกันเอง ลูกออกมาผิดปกติได้ด้วย) โดยมีระบบ DNA ที่สืบทอดลักษณะต่างๆ จากรุ่นสู่รุ่น และในภาคนี้ยังเพิ่มโมเดลตัวละครแบบสามมิติ ที่หากเป็นตัวลูก ก็จะสร้างขึ้นจากส่วนผสมของหน้าตาตัวละครพ่อแม่ และสามารถเปลี่ยนแปลงได้แบบไดนามิก แสดงอายุ อาการบาดเจ็บ หรืออาการเจ็บป่วยของตัวละครได้ นอกจากนี้ยังเพิ่มระบบความเครียด ที่อาจทำให้ตัวละครเกิดสถานะ ติดเหล้า เสเพล และยังเหตุการณ์ใหม่ๆ อีกเพียบ
