Dragon Ball Fighter Z เป็นเกมแนว Fighting 2.5D โดยมีพื้นฐานการเล่นแบบ Combo ง่ายๆ และการควงปุ่มไม่กี่ท่า เหมาะสำหรับผู้เล่นทุกคน ตัวเกมมีความง่ายมากๆ ชนิดที่ว่ามั่วๆ ปุ่มก็สามารถออกถ้า Combo รัวๆ ได้ แต่ถึงอย่างนั้น ตัวเกมก็ค่อนข้างจะใช้เทคนิคสูงอยู่มาก หากเล่นแบบจริงจังแล้วจะพบเลยว่า ตัวเกมค่อนข้างมีความสมดุลย์อยู่สูง สามารถนำไปแข่งขันอย่างจริงจังได้เลยทีเดียว เนื้อเรื่องจะพูดถึงโลกในปัจจุบัน ที่อยู่ในภาค Super ขณะที่ทุกๆคนกำลังใช้ชีวิตอยู่ปกติ มนุษย์ดัดแปลงหมายเลข 19 ที่ควรจะตายไปแล้วได้โผล่มาที่หาโกคู ที่บ้านบลูม่า ในสภาพสมบูรณ์แบบ และเข้าจะโจมตีโกคูด้วยเหตุผลบางอย่าง อีกทั้งตัวโกคูและเพื่อนๆเองนั้นจะเสียพลังในการต่อสู้ไปเกือบทั้งหมด แต่กลับมีร่างโคลนของตัวเองโผล่มา และการปรากฎตัวของตัวละครใหม่จากกองทัพ Red Ribbon ทั้งหมดสามารถไขปริศนานี้ได้ในโหมดเนื้อเรื่องของเกมภาคนี้
