Phoenix Point จะพาผู้เล่นเข้าสู่สงครามแห่งมนุษยชาติระหว่างชาวโลกและมนุษย์กลายพันธุ์ที่ต้องห้ำหั่นกันเพื่อชิงอิสรภาพกลับคืนมาให้ได้ โดยตัวเกมจะมีระบบ Turn-based Tactical Combat ตามสไตล์ผู้สร้างเกม X-COM พร้อมแผนที่แบบ Procedurally Generated ให้เราได้ลุ้นภัยอันตรายข้างหน้า รวมไปถึงการจัดสรรทรัพยากรให้ผู้รอดชีวิตทั่วโลกหลังเกิดเหตุการณ์เชื้อไวรัสจากต่างดาวระบาดจนกลุ่ม The Phoenix Project ต้องออกมาตอบโต้

ตัวเกมจะมาพร้อมกับ AI ฝั่งศัตรูที่โหดและดุเดือดชนิดที่ว่าเราไม่สามารถต่อกรกันได้ง่ายๆ ดังนั้นผู้เล่นจำเป็นต้องวางแผนในการต่อสู้ให้ดีเพื่อเอาคืนพวกมันอย่างสาสม เราต้องจัดสรรหน่วยรบอย่างเป็นระบบและถึงแม้ว่าจะเป็นเกมแนววางแผน แต่ผู้เล่นสามารถเล็งเป้าตัวละครให้โดนจุดอ่อนได้อย่างอิสระเช่นกัน เรียกได้ว่าเอาใจคอแอคชั่นสายยิงโดยแท้จริง นอกจากนี้เกมยังมีระบบความสัมพันธ์รวมไปถึงฉากจบอีกหลายแบบให้ติดตามด้วย
