Dishonored เป็นเกมแนว action-adventure ในมุมมอง first-person ที่เน้นการซุ่ม (stealth) และการใช้อุปกรณ์และสิ่งแวดล้อมให้เป็นประโยชน์ในการสังหารศัตรู โดยผู้เล่นจะรับบทเป็น Corvo ซึ่งเป็นบอดี้การ์ดให้กับราชินีแต่กลับถูกใส่ร้ายว่าเป็นผู้สังหารราชินี จึงได้กลายเป็นนักฆ่าที่เต็มไปด้วยความแค้น ตัวละครยังสามารถเรียนรู้ความสามารถพิเศษได้ด้วยการเก็บ Rune และสามารถอัพเกรดอุปกรณ์ของตัวเองได้เช่นเดียวกัน ในแต่ละภารกิจจะมีหลายทางในการเข้าหาเป้าหมาย
